New wayfinding signs installed across Bolton town centre
Bolton Council has completed the installation of 34 new circular wayfinding signs across the town centre. The initiative, funded by the Mayor’s Challenge Fund, is designed to improve accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and those using scooters.
The new signage is positioned at high-traffic locations, including Victoria Square, Bradshawgate, Churchgate, Knowsley Street, and the area surrounding the railway station. Each sign provides clear directions to key local landmarks and services, such as the Parish church, the library, Queens Park, the town hall, Bolton Market, the university, and local colleges.
Supporting Active Travel
Beyond simple navigation, the signs include estimated walking times to help residents and visitors plan their journeys on foot. Some installations also feature motivational messaging intended to encourage active travel as a means of improving public health and reducing vehicle congestion in the town centre.
This project follows requests from a coalition of town centre businesses, local councillors, and the Town Centre East steering group, who identified a need for more intuitive wayfinding. The council emphasized that the town centre is already pedestrian-friendly, and these additions are intended to build on that foundation by making it easier for people to locate amenities and attractions.
Community Launch Event
The installation was marked by a launch event in Victoria Square, where residents were invited to test balance bikes and e-bikes. Councillor Nadeem Ayub, Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Transport and Highways, stated that the signs represent a practical improvement aimed at balancing the needs of shoppers, theatre-goers, and students while promoting sustainable transport habits.
