Brentwood benches bring more places to rest in town centres

A wooden bench with black metal frames sits on a paved sidewalk in town.

Thirty new wooden benches are being installed across Brentwood and Shenfield town centres, with work already under way in Brentwood and due to start in Shenfield. Existing benches are being replaced as each new one goes in, so seating remains available during the phased programme.

Where the new benches are going

The installation covers both town centres. The first benches have appeared in Brentwood; work in Shenfield is next. Brentwood Borough Council has not specified individual streets or a completion date.

The benches are made from iroko hardwood, selected for outdoor durability and natural resistance to rot and mould. Each has a backrest and armrests, providing support for people using the seating while shopping or visiting the centres.

Memorial plaques will move to replacement benches

Where an existing bench carries a memorial plaque, the plaque will be carefully removed and transferred to the replacement bench in the same location. The council says this will preserve commemorations for local families and the wider community.

The bench installation is part of a broader public realm improvement scheme that also includes new wayfinding signage. The project is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Artwork panels planned for early 2027

Further changes are planned for early 2027, when bespoke artistic panels will replace the backrest slats on several benches. The artwork is being specially commissioned to reflect local identity and heritage. More details are expected closer to the time.
