Residents, businesses and community groups in Braintree District have until 5pm on 6 November 2026 to comment on the council’s Submission Draft Local Plan. This is the final consultation before the plan may go to the Planning Inspectorate for independent examination.

How to comment before 6 November

Review the plan and its supporting documents, then submit a representation through the consultation details and guidance on Braintree District Council’s Local Plan 2043 page. Hard copies of the documents and response forms are available at local libraries across the district and at Causeway House in Braintree.

The council says comments at this stage should address whether the plan has been prepared correctly, is supported by appropriate evidence and meets national planning requirements. Anyone who wants a point considered by the Planning Inspector during the examination must submit it to this consultation.

What the draft plan covers

The Braintree District Submission Draft Local Plan sets out a proposed framework for growth and development up to 2043. It identifies where new homes, jobs and infrastructure could be located, and includes policies concerning the environment, heritage and green spaces. A Cressing housing scheme offers local context on housing development within the district.

Once adopted, the plan will guide planning decisions across the district. Braintree District Council says an up-to-date plan is required by government and is intended to give the district more influence over development locations and supporting infrastructure.

What happens after the consultation closes

After 6 November, the plan is due to go to Full Council in December. Councillors will decide whether to submit it to the Secretary of State for independent examination. If submitted, all consultation comments will be shared with the Planning Inspectorate.

A Planning Inspector would review the plan and representations, then determine whether changes are needed before the plan can be adopted. The council says the housing requirement the plan must address is set by central government.
