Bolton streets get a cleaner autumn as new kit arrives
Bolton Council has added road and pavement sweepers, larger litter bins and secure equipment stores to support street cleaning and autumn leaf clearance across the town. The upgrades are intended to help keep routes tidy and drains clear as leaves and twigs fall.
New sweepers target roads, pavements and cycle lanes
A third large road sweeper has joined the council’s fleet. These machines clear leaves and twigs from roads and drains, which the council says can reduce the risk of flooding as well as keep streets tidy.
Six smaller mechanical sweepers work on pavements, with teams covering different areas on a rotating schedule. A newly added electric pavement sweeper can reach narrower spaces, including cycle lanes.
Environmental Services teams have shifted from summer work such as grass cutting and weed spraying to autumn leaf clearance. The council says routes including Chorley New Road and Gilnow Road are among those targeted because of their trees and the leaves and debris they produce.
Larger bins and stores support local clean-ups
Almost 50 bins on main transport routes have been replaced with models holding more than twice as much. The extra capacity is intended to reduce overflowing litter.
Eight Volunteer Vaults have also been installed, taking the town’s total to 18. These secure, brightly painted stores hold equipment for volunteer litter-picking groups at convenient locations, so volunteers can access tools without transporting dirty kit.
The council has not specified a timetable for the cleaning schedule or named further routes due to receive equipment. Executive Member for Climate Change and Environment Cllr Robert Morrisey thanked local volunteers and said the investment would support their work.
