Early-morning cleaning moves through Swindon centre

Power-washing began in Swindon town centre on Monday, 10 August, with weekday work scheduled between 6am and 8.30am over the coming weeks. The programme starts at Wharf Green before moving to other parts of the centre.

Swindon Borough Council has not published a street-by-street timetable or identified any closures. Residents, commuters and businesses using the centre early in the day may encounter cleaning crews, while later visitors should largely avoid the scheduled working period.

The power-washing forms part of The Big Town Centre Clean-Up, which is concentrating existing council services and resources during August. The authority says the aim is to achieve a visible short-term improvement while more than 85 per cent of its budget remains committed to statutory social care services.

Paving repairs run alongside the cleaning

Council teams began repairing uneven sections of paving at Wharf Green during the week before power-washing started. The surface has been affected by tree-root growth over time, and further paving repairs elsewhere in the town centre are being scheduled.

The wider work also includes graffiti removal and follow-up action after a town-centre weed-control treatment completed at the end of June. The council says results from that treatment are now visible in places including Newbridge Square.

What residents and businesses may notice

The programme is focused on paved areas, weeds, graffiti, benches, flower beds and litter. No detailed notice of pedestrian restrictions has been provided, so people who regularly pass through Wharf Green should allow for crews and equipment during the 6am-to-8.30am window rather than assume a route will be closed.

Around 95 per cent of town-centre land and buildings is privately owned. Commercial and residential property owners and landlords have been asked to resolve maintenance problems, with formal enforcement action possible where properties continue to harm the local environment.

Volunteer work follows later in August

The next confirmed phase is a series of volunteer sessions during the final two weeks of August. Some 180 slots had been booked when the council issued its update, covering litter-picking, bench restoration, flower-bed work and graffiti removal. A British Gas volunteer team is also due to remove waste material from inside the tented market on Market Street. The council has yet to name the locations that will follow Wharf Green in the power-washing schedule.
