Swindon’s Big Town Centre Clean-Up needs August volunteers
Swindon residents are being invited to spend a day helping refresh the town centre during The Big Town Centre Clean-Up. The free community volunteering programme runs on weekdays from Monday, 17 August to Friday, 28 August, with each session taking place across Swindon Town Centre from 10am to 3pm.
Residents, councillors and Swindon Borough Council employees can register online for a specific day. The council will assign volunteers to practical activities according to the work and operational priorities scheduled for that date.
Ten weekday sessions across the town centre
Volunteering is available on each weekday during the final two weeks of August. People can choose one of the following dates when registering:
| Day | Available dates |
|---|---|
| Monday | 17 and 24 August |
| Tuesday | 18 and 25 August |
| Wednesday | 19 and 26 August |
| Thursday | 20 and 27 August |
| Friday | 21 and 28 August |
Every session is scheduled for 10am to 3pm. Activities will take place across the town centre rather than at a single venue specified in the council notice.
The programme is intended to bring volunteers alongside council teams already carrying out a concentrated package of public-realm improvements. Those council operations will include power-washing public spaces, repairing paving, clearing weeds and removing graffiti.
Litter-picking, benches and flower beds among the tasks
Volunteer assignments may include litter-picking, restoring benches, refreshing flower beds and helping to remove graffiti. The exact activity will depend on what is needed and what work is under way on the selected day, so registration confirms a volunteering date rather than a particular task.
Swindon Borough Council says the aim is to improve the appearance of parts of the town centre and make the area cleaner and more welcoming for residents, visitors and businesses. The initiative is also designed to complement work already undertaken by local volunteers and community groups during the year.
Councillor Kevin Parry, the council’s Cabinet Member for Recycling and Streetscene, said bringing residents, councillors and council colleagues together would allow the teams to achieve more while making a visible difference.
Councillor Matthew Vallender, Cabinet Member for Culture, Planning and Regeneration, said the council had already been working with businesses and landowners and was now asking the wider community to participate.
Registration is required for a chosen day
Participation is free, but volunteers must register online in advance for a specific date. The source notice does not provide a precise meeting point, transport guidance or accessibility information, so those details are not confirmed in the published announcement.
Anyone planning to take part should select one of the ten listed weekday sessions between 17 and 28 August. Once registered, volunteers will receive an assignment based on the council’s priorities and the improvement work taking place that day.
