Cambridge seniors keep a 40-year seaside tradition going

More than 300 older residents from Cambridge and nearby areas travelled to Great Yarmouth on Tuesday, 11 August, for the 2026 Mayor’s Day Out.

A fleet of coaches took the group to the Norfolk resort for the annual trip, which has been part of Cambridge’s civic calendar for more than four decades. Cambridge mayor Cllr Maria Cleminson joined the outing and marked the arrival with the traditional mayoral paddle in the North Sea.

A familiar day by the Great Yarmouth seafront

The day gave travellers time to enjoy Great Yarmouth’s seafront, beach and fish and chips before an afternoon performance in Anchor Gardens by Britain’s Got Talent finalists the D-Day Darlings.

Cllr Cleminson said the continued popularity of the event showed the pleasure it brings to participants. She noted that John Woodhouse began the idea in 1986, and that it remains a highlight for many residents 40 years later.

Cambridge residents can look ahead to 2027

Mayor’s Day Out is due to return in 2027. Cambridge residents aged over 55 will be able to book a place when details are released.

The council has not yet published booking, coach or timing information for next year’s trip. People interested in taking part are being asked to watch the City Events website and its social-media channels for updates.
