Birmingham residents are being invited to turn an everyday walk or wheel into points for their city as a new six-week challenge pits Birmingham against Liverpool.

This City Moves begins on 7 September. Participants use the Go Jauntly app, choose an achievable daily target and try to reach it throughout the challenge. Every completed day helps Birmingham climb the shared leaderboard — and could help the city secure blossom trees from the National Trust.

The challenge is open to individuals as well as families, friends and community groups. Birmingham City Council says every participant counts, including those who select the lowest target.

Three daily targets make every distance count

Participants can choose between goals of 1,000, 3,000 or 5,000 steps a day. The selected goal remains the personal benchmark for the six-week campaign, allowing people to contribute without everyone having to cover the same distance.

A completed 1,000-step day carries value for Birmingham in the same way that reaching a larger personal target does. That structure gives occasional walkers a practical entry point while leaving more active participants free to aim higher.

The council announcement explicitly invites people who walk or wheel. It does not explain how wheeling activity is recorded or translated within the step-based targets, so participants who need that option should check the instructions in Go Jauntly when joining.

Birmingham and Liverpool compete for the city prize

The city contest adds a collective incentive to the personal six-week goal. Birmingham and Liverpool will move up the leaderboard whenever their participants complete a daily target, with local bragging rights and National Trust blossom trees at stake.

That means consistency matters more than choosing the largest number. Someone reaching a manageable target regularly can keep adding completed days to Birmingham’s total rather than selecting a goal that does not suit their routine.

The source does not specify how many blossom trees are available or where they would be planted if Birmingham wins.

New local walks offer a head start before 7 September

Go Jauntly has added new walks to its Birmingham collection ahead of the official start. Residents can use them to practise, explore unfamiliar neighbourhoods and encounter more of the city’s parks, heritage, culture and geography.

Councillor Rob Grant, Birmingham’s cabinet member for transport, said the city’s routes range from parks and green spaces to walks shaped by its culture and heritage. He described the challenge as something residents could attempt alone or with family, friends and community groups while discovering places close to home.

To participate, residents need to visit the Go Jauntly challenge page, join This City Moves, select one of the three daily goals and be ready for the six-week count from 7 September.
