Whitehill & Bordon’s new Sainsbury’s remains expected to open in spring 2027, after East Hampshire District Council reported that much of the foodstore’s external cladding has now been completed and brickwork has started on its lower levels.

The 7 August 2026 update follows a site visit by East Hampshire District Council Deputy Leader Cllr Andy Tree and Whitehill Bordon Regeneration Company project lead James Child. It provides the latest visible indication that the foodstore, shops, office space and parking facilities are progressing as part of the town-centre regeneration scheme.

Spring 2027 remains the expected opening window

The current construction programme is still on track for a spring 2027 opening, according to the council. However, residents do not yet have a confirmed opening day.

The spring 2027 date is therefore an expected window rather than a final public schedule. Construction must first be completed and the site handed to Sainsbury’s, which will then carry out the internal fit-out, recruit staff and make the final decisions around opening arrangements.

Five shop units, office space and Banking Hub planned alongside the store

The scheme is designed to deliver more than the supermarket itself. A steel-framed structure connected to the main Sainsbury’s building will provide five smaller shop units at ground-floor level.

Above those units, the development includes more than 4,000 square feet of office space intended for small businesses. Whitehill & Bordon Banking Hub has already confirmed that it will take one of the retail units.

The council said there had also been interest in the other shop spaces, but no additional occupiers have yet been named. That means the Banking Hub is the only confirmed smaller-unit tenant at this stage.

Parking structure is already visible on site

A multi-storey car park is also included in the development. Its stairwell and lift block can already be seen in place, making the parking element one of the more visible parts of the wider build alongside the supermarket structure.

For residents, the project is set to bring a new foodstore together with smaller retail premises, business space, banking services and multi-storey parking in the town-centre development. The council and regeneration company have described the foodstore as a key milestone in the wider Whitehill & Bordon project.

Handover to Sainsbury’s is the next confirmed stage

Cllr Tree said he was pleased to see progress on the build and was looking forward to the completed store opening. James Child said the project had remained on its planned programme.

The next verifiable milestone will be completion of construction and handover to Sainsbury’s, allowing the retailer to begin its internal fit-out and recruitment before confirming a final opening date.
