East Dunbartonshire Council has approved its Climate Action Plan 2026-2040, setting two net-zero deadlines and a separate commitment to strengthen the area against climate impacts. The plan follows public consultation held from October to December 2025.

For residents, the approval provides a framework rather than an immediate change to a service, bill or journey. The council has not yet published project-level delivery dates in its announcement.

Two deadlines cover different emissions

The council aims to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2036 for emissions it produces directly and those linked to the energy it purchases. This is the earlier, organisation-focused target.

A 2045 target applies to all other greenhouse gas emissions, including emissions across East Dunbartonshire as a whole. That wider deadline extends beyond council operations, although the announcement does not assign responsibilities or set interim milestones.

Eight themes will shape local delivery

The plan covers transport; buildings and heat decarbonisation; sustainable communities; the natural environment; consumption and waste; business and the economy; supply chains, investment and digital infrastructure; and food and agriculture.

Those themes show where practical measures may emerge, but the approved plan does not confirm which schemes will start first, how they will be funded or when residents will notice changes. Its third central commitment is to improve local resilience to the continuing effects of climate change.

Councillor Gordan Low, leader of East Dunbartonshire Council, described the plan as a “strategic roadmap” for cutting emissions, building resilience and delivering benefits for communities. He said consultation responses helped shape the final version.

Community forums are the next confirmed step

The council is establishing Community and Youth Climate Change Forums to guide and deliver local action. The first community forum will be held online on Monday 10 August 2026, from 6pm to 7.30pm, with residents and local groups invited.

Registration and subscriptions to the Climate Action Plan newsletter are available by emailing sustainability@eastdunbarton.gov.uk. The council also approved signing the Climate Ready Clyde Concordat in June, linking its adaptation work to wider Glasgow City Region efforts.
