Silver End hall looks to solar power to cut running costs
By demoduck.co.uk Newsdesk | Published 7 October 2026
Silver End Village Hall has received planning permission for 123 rooftop solar panels, intended to reduce the community building’s energy costs and carbon emissions. Braintree District Council’s Planning Committee approved the application on Tuesday 6 October 2026.
The hall provides space for community activities, events and support services. Lower running costs are intended to support its long-term sustainability, although the council’s announcement does not give an estimated annual saving or electricity output.

The panels will sit on angled frames on the building’s flat roof. According to the council, they will not be visible from the ground nearby, helping to preserve the appearance of the hall and the wider Silver End Conservation Area.
The approved installation will generate renewable electricity to help power the hall. Batteries and connection works are also included in the installation schedule.
Councillor Kevin Bowers, the council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Assets and Performance, said the improvements would help reduce energy costs and safeguard the facility for the future.
Installation expected to begin in November
The council says contractors already working on site will begin installing the panels in November 2026, with batteries and connection works completed soon afterwards.

The announcement gives a planned start month rather than an exact installation date or final completion deadline.
The scheme forms part of Braintree District Council’s £1.5 million community asset modernisation programme. That figure covers the wider district programme, rather than the solar installation at Silver End Village Hall alone.
