Ninety-four players contested the first Mayor’s Badminton Cup at Mile End Leisure Centre on Thursday, 23 July 2026. According to results published by Tower Hamlets Council, champions were crowned across the open-age women’s, open-age men’s and junior doubles competitions.

First cup titles go to four pairs

Tarek Ahmed and Jahed Ahmed became the inaugural open-age men’s champions after progressing through a field of 20 teams.

The women’s event attracted 26 participants. Tower Hamlets Council listed two winning pairings: Onyinye Nkemdirim and Phuong Phuong, and Farzana Sheikh and Momota Hussain. The published account described them as winners in two categories but did not provide the individual category names.

Ismail Ahmed and Md Shipar won the junior boys’ and girls’ doubles event, which featured 14 teams. Md Shipar was also named the tournament’s young player.

Participation figures account for 94 entrants

The reported division totals account for all 94 players: 26 in the women’s competition, 28 across the 14 junior doubles teams and 40 across the 20 men’s teams.

The combination of open-age and junior events brought established players and emerging talent from across Tower Hamlets onto the same tournament programme. The council presented the cup as a way to connect residents through sport while creating more opportunities for women and girls to remain active.

Organisers plan another tournament

Councillor Minara Khatun, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said the first cup had provided a foundation for an annual community sporting event and congratulated everyone who participated.

Tower Hamlets Council said it looked forward to another tournament next year, although its report did not provide a date, entry arrangements or a confirmed venue for the next edition.
