Tour of Britain Women: Cockermouth road closures on 19 August

A professional cyclist leads a pack of riders during a competitive road cycling race.

Cockermouth will host the opening stage of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Women on Wednesday 19 August, bringing Britain’s biggest professional women’s cycle race through west and north Cumberland before a finish back in town.

The free spectator event starts and finishes at Cockermouth Town Centre, around Main Street and Station Street. Racing is scheduled from 10.40am, with no booking required. It is aimed at anyone wanting to watch professional women’s cycling, but residents, businesses and drivers along the route will need to plan around temporary closures and parking restrictions.

Cumberland Council says the 158.9km Cycling Race will begin in Cockermouth, travel through a series of coastal and inland communities, then return for the finish.

The opening stage is set to pass through Whitehaven, Workington, Maryport, Allonby, Silloth, Abbeytown, Wigton, Caldbeck, Aspatria and Cockermouth.

Rolling road closures are expected between about 10.40am and 4.30pm. This means traffic will be held temporarily as riders and the race convoy pass, then reopened once it is safe. Lead vehicles may arrive around 15 minutes before the riders.

Cockermouth streets affected on race day

The start and finish arrangements will bring the most sustained disruption to central Cockermouth. Main Street and Station Street are due to close from 4am until 6.30pm. South Street is scheduled to close from 7am until 5pm.

Crown Street, Sullart Street and Gallowbarrow are due to close from 9am until 11.30am while event infrastructure is installed. The A595 between Bothel and Cockermouth is scheduled to close from 2pm until 3.45pm for the final part of the stage; the actual closure could be shorter.

Parking and travel planning for spectators

Several public car parks are available around Cockermouth town centre, including Riverside long-stay car park and Fairfield short-stay car park. Cockermouth Rugby Club will be available as overflow parking for visitors coming to watch the race.

Cumberland Council is working with local partners on further parking options and says details will be published once arrangements are finalised. Residents and visitors with traffic-restriction queries can contact the council’s Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736.
