Blackmill drivers face phased A4061 bridge closures

A stone bridge spans a flowing river in front of traditional residential houses.

Drivers using the A4061 at Blackmill should expect intermittent closures from January 2027, followed by an extended closure from April while the river bridge deck is removed and replaced. The diversion will run via the A4093 at Llangeinor. The closure durations have not yet been set.

Closures will come in stages from January

Preparatory and utility work is due to begin in January 2027, with closure periods needed during this phase. From April, the bridge deck is scheduled to be removed and replaced, requiring an extended road closure. Utility infrastructure will then need to be reinstalled.

Bridgend County Borough Council says it will aim to complete the work as quickly and efficiently as possible, but has not provided set durations for any of the closures. The project follows routine inspections that identified structural issues with the A4061 river bridge.

Diversion via Llangeinor

Motorists will be diverted via the A4093 at Llangeinor while closures are in place. Road signs are due to be installed at least four weeks before work begins, with further signage in wider areas to help drivers plan their journeys. Read more about the A4061 bridge diversion.

The council has not yet confirmed the length of the diversion periods. Drivers should look out for signs and council updates as the start date approaches.

School transport changes to be shared with parents

The council is confirming arrangements with school transport providers. Parents will be contacted directly if services change. The council also says it will make plans for other council services directly affected by the closure.

The project is supported by £3.5 million in Welsh Government regional transport funding. The council and contractor Centregreat Limited say they will provide regular updates before and during the works. Further community meetings are also planned after a public meeting held earlier this week.
