Thornton Garden of Rest Crematorium will hold a free Open Day from 11am to 2pm on Saturday 26 September 2026. The event at the crematorium in Thornton, Sefton, is open to all, including people who want to understand cremation, explore memorial choices or consider future funeral arrangements.

Sefton Council Bereavement Services is organising the day. Staff will explain their work, answer questions and offer visitors a closer look at services that families may encounter when arranging a funeral. The council’s announcement does not state that advance booking is required.

Guided tours will explain how the crematorium operates

Visitors will be able to join a guided tour of Thornton Garden of Rest Crematorium and meet the Bereavement Services staff who support families arranging a farewell for a loved one.

The tour is intended to provide a transparent account of the cremation process. Staff will explain what happens at the crematorium and how the service follows legal and environmental standards, with an opportunity for visitors to put questions directly to the team responsible for its operation.

This may be particularly relevant to people who have never visited a crematorium or who want to know what takes place before making decisions for themselves or a family member. Rather than relying only on written information, attendees can see the setting and discuss the process with the people who deliver the service.

Memorial choices and funeral planning will be covered

Bereavement Services staff will provide information about the memorial options and other services available at Thornton Garden of Rest. The discussion will include how families can plan a funeral around their individual requirements.

Direct cremation will be among the options explained. Sefton Council describes it as a dignified and more affordable alternative to a traditional funeral service, although the announcement does not provide prices or package details. Visitors interested in that option can use the Open Day to clarify what the service involves and how it differs from arrangements that include a traditional ceremony.

Funeral directors Dignity and celebrant service Good Funeral Company will also be present. Their attendance will give visitors access to examples of the different professional services involved in funeral arrangements, alongside the council’s Bereavement Services team.

Councillor Peter Harvey, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member overseeing Bereavement Services, said the event would allow people to find out more about the support available, have questions answered and seek reassurance about how a farewell would be handled.
