Swindon drivers face late-summer road closures

Drivers using several of Swindon’s busiest routes should plan for daytime closures and diversions this August and September as four priority resurfacing schemes get under way.
Swindon Borough Council says Bath Road, Croft Road, Draycot Road and The Ridgeway, and Station Road have been added to its summer programme because they are high-traffic parts of the local road network in need of repair. The additional work takes the number of roads receiving improvements this summer to 22.

Residents and businesses directly affected by each scheme have been notified by letter. The council says access will be maintained where possible, while other drivers will be directed along signed diversion routes.
Bath Road and Croft Road dates
The first confirmed work is on Bath Road, followed immediately by Croft Road. Each site is expected to take between three and five days to complete.

Croft Road’s programme has been scheduled before schools return from the summer break, reducing the chance of work coinciding with the usual school-run traffic.
Daytime closures and Station Road overnight work
Most of the resurfacing sites will close from 8am to 6pm during their allocated repair periods. That closure window is intended to allow contractors to complete the work safely and without repeatedly reopening part-finished sections of road.
Station Road is the exception. Its resurfacing will take place between 8pm and 6am, a timetable chosen to avoid peak use of the route. The council has not published the specific Station Road dates in this announcement.
For regular commuters, the practical effect is likely to be a changed route rather than a complete loss of access. People travelling through the affected areas should allow extra time and follow the signed diversions in place while crews are working.

More than £2m allocated to Swindon’s road network
The schemes form part of Swindon Borough Council’s annual resurfacing programme, backed by more than £2 million of investment in the road network during the current financial year.
Councillor Nick Gardiner, the council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said the four additions include roads that had been a priority for repair for a considerable time. He said the programme is intended to help address the repair backlog alongside reactive work such as filling potholes and repairing street furniture.
The council expects the four schemes to be finished by the end of September, subject to the scheduled work periods and site conditions.
