Pontypridd drivers face a week of disruption at key junction

Drivers using central Pontypridd are being urged to allow extra time or avoid the Berw Road route where possible from Monday 17 August. Temporary traffic lights and a lane closure will be installed near the Berw Road-Bridge Street junction while scaffolding is put up at the former Pontypridd Police Station.

The work is part of the demolition of the police station and the permanently closed Berw Road Car Park. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council says no road closure is planned for the first phase, but delays are likely on Berw Road and nearby streets.

Dates and traffic arrangements

Date to be confirmed	Further temporary traffic management is planned outside the former police station on Morgan Street.

The temporary lights at the junction will be manually controlled at peak times. Buses and larger vehicles will still be able to use the available routes.

Plan ahead if Berw Road is part of your journey

The council has scheduled the first short-term works during the school summer holiday in an effort to reduce disruption. Even so, motorists should expect queues around the junction and consider another route if they can.

White Bridge, also known as Berw Road Bridge, is due to have localised repairs between 10 and 16 August. Those repairs are expected to finish before the junction traffic management begins, and the bridge will remain open while the Berw Road restrictions are in place. Drivers may also wish to note related bridge disruption in Pontypridd when planning journeys.

A footway closure around the former police station and car park buildings will also continue during demolition, so pedestrians should follow the signed arrangements rather than approaching the work area.

Former police station site enters demolition phase

Demolition began on 3 August and is being carried out by council contractor Prichard’s. The early stages include site setup, specialist surveys, removal work, internal preparation and scaffolding before the buildings are taken down.

The former Pontypridd Police Station has transferred to the council, while South Wales Police plans a new town-centre base on Taff Street. Demolition of both the police station and Berw Road Car Park is supported by the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme.

A second round of restrictions is still being arranged

The council is developing options for the two sites that could include public space, replacement parking, walking and cycling links, Bridge Street junction improvements, and residential, commercial or cultural uses. No final redevelopment scheme has been confirmed.

A second period of traffic management will be needed for further scaffolding work, but its dates and exact arrangements have not yet been announced. The council says drivers should expect some unavoidable delays during both elements of the work.
