Plymouth Big Green Trail offers free family day out: key details

Families heading into Central Park on Saturday 20 June will find The Big Green Trail spread across the park with nature activities, creative workshops, cycling checks and local climate projects running through the day.

The free Community Festival takes place in Plymouth from 10am to 3pm. Entry is free, no booking is required, and the event is aimed at families and residents who want an outdoors day out with practical, hands-on activities rather than a formal programme.

Led by Climate Connections, a Plymouth City Council project, the trail brings together local organisations, conservation groups and community projects in one park-based route.

Free activities across Central Park

The Big Green Trail is designed as a route through Central Park, with activity stops dotted around the site. Visitors can move at their own pace, using a specially designed activity pack to collect stamps at each stop and turn the day into a mini trail around the park.

One of the most visible activities will be the inflatable obstacle course from Westcountry Rivers Trust, billed as a fun way to explore how rivers work. Nature-focused stops will include crafts, wildlife identification and guided walks with National Trust and Green Communities.

Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and Ocean Conservation Trust will run marine games and activities using ocean artefacts. Other organisations involved include RSPB, Devon Wildlife Trust and Dartmoor Zoo, with activities focused on local wildlife and conservation.

There will also be creative sessions. Climate Action Plymouth is bringing Haikus for Hope, while Plymouth Scrapstore and Sewcial Guild’s Sew on the Road will focus on reuse, making and hands-on craft.

Bikes, home energy and climate action

The practical side of the event includes a free bike service and safety check from Dr Bike. Local transport organisations will also run cycling challenges, adding a more active element to the trail.

Home energy and renewable energy advice will be presented through interactive games from Plymouth Energy Community and Eljay Energy. The format means visitors can pick up information while taking part in the wider family event, rather than attending a stand-alone advice session.

The trail will also feature Plymouth’s Local Climate Legends, recognising residents, community groups and organisations taking environmental action across the city. Visitors will be able to step into the Local Climate Legend Living Room to watch short films and hear local stories of positive action.

Tom Briars-Delve, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “The Big Green Trail is a fantastic way for people of all ages to get outdoors and learn more about the small changes we can all make to protect our environment. It’s about bringing communities together while inspiring positive action for Plymouth’s greener future.”

Getting there on the day

Plymouth Citybus will run a free hop-on, hop-off trail bus for the event, with pick-up points at Royal Parade, George Park and Ride and Milehouse Park and Ride.

For visitors travelling by bike, Beryl will offer one free ride per person. The offer covers 20 minutes of riding plus a free unlock, with no code required.

The event details confirmed by the council are: Saturday 20 June, 10am to 3pm, Central Park, Plymouth. The Big Green Trail is free to attend and no booking is required.
