Armed Forces Week begins with the flag raised at Guildhall
Plymouth marked the start of Armed Forces Week on Monday 22 June with a flag-raising ceremony outside Plymouth Guildhall.
The ceremony was attended by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Kevin Sproston, and Commander Maxine Burgess, HMNB Devonport Base Executive Officer, alongside other military and civic leaders. The Armed Forces Flag will fly through the week as events continue across the city.
Councillor Matt Smith, Plymouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, City Centre Regeneration and Events, said the week was a chance to thank “serving personnel to reservists, veterans and cadets” for their work.
Free displays, parades and a Battle of Britain flypast
Saturday’s Armed Forces Day programme on Plymouth Hoe is set to include interactive displays, military equipment, demonstrations, parades, live music and entertainment.
The source programme also confirms an afternoon flypast from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Across the Hoe, visitors will find dedicated areas for each Military Service, an Emergency Services village and a Veterans Village supported by the Royal British Legion.
More than 100 charities and organisations are expected to be represented, offering advice and support. Local companies will also be present with career information and hands-on activities.
Babcock International Group, associated with the event, is due to run an action-packed display with hands-on STEM activities for all ages, alongside information about careers and apprenticeships at its Devonport facility.
Family activities and live music through the day
The event is designed as a family-friendly day out, with activities spread across Plymouth Hoe rather than a single-stage programme.
Car enthusiasts will be able to see vintage military vehicles, alongside a large display from the Murray Group. On the Hoe promenade, the Foster for Plymouth marquee will offer free family fun, including glitter tattoos, popular characters and information about fostering in Plymouth.
Live music performances are scheduled throughout the day. The programme finishes with a free evening concert sponsored by C&G Catering, featuring Marmalade, The Vibes, Riviera Dogs and Authentic Elton.
Strength of Spirit Games come first on Thursday
Before Saturday’s Armed Forces Day event, visitors are encouraged to attend the Strength of Spirit Games Rehabilitation Triathlon on Thursday 25 June, also on Plymouth Hoe.
That event starts at 10.30am with a swim at Tinside Lido, followed by a cycle and static row before the finish. The Plymouth School Sports Partnership Junior Rowing Challenge will also take place from 10am to 11.15am, with children from military families representing 24 local primary schools.
Commander Maxine Burgess said Armed Forces Week in Plymouth reflects “the strong relationship between the Armed Forces based in and around the city and the community that supports us.”
