More Welsh families move closer to funded childcare

Families with two-year-olds across Wales are expected to be offered 12.5 hours of Welsh Government-funded childcare each week by the end of March 2027. All 22 local authorities have indicated that they are on track to complete this first phase of the national expansion.

Every two-year-old is included in the first phase

The current commitment covers all two-year-olds in Wales. It is intended to give more families access to affordable childcare while helping parents and carers who want to work or undertake training.

Deputy First Minister Sioned Williams said childcare support could help address poverty and gender inequality, strengthen the economy and improve educational outcomes. She described the movement from three authorities with full coverage to all 22 being on track as evidence of rapid progress in the rollout.

Williams also said access to high-quality early years education and care can affect children’s development and life chances while providing practical support during the first years of family life.
