Milton Keynes carers offered free support event

A free drop-in Carers Support Event will bring Milton Keynes carers, families and local support organisations into one room during Carers Week.

The event takes place on Wednesday 10 June, from 11am to 1pm, at Simpson Day Centre, Simpson Road, MK6 3AF. It is free to attend and open to unpaid carers in Milton Keynes, as well as friends and family who want to understand what help is available.

Milton Keynes City Council says the session is designed for residents who regularly care for a friend or family member. That includes people supporting someone because of illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction.

Simpson Day Centre hosts the June drop-in session

The Carers Support Event is being held during the UK-wide Carers Week, giving local residents a chance to speak directly with professionals rather than searching for advice across several separate services.

Alongside services from Milton Keynes City Council, organisations expected at the event include Age UK, Healthwatch, the NHS, Citizens Advice and Alzheimer’s Society, reflecting the kind of practical help also available through free support events for carers. Citizens Advice and Alzheimer’s Society are also part of the council’s dedicated Carers Support Service, which launched last year.

The format is a drop-in session, so the source notice does not list any booking requirement. The council describes it as open to all MK residents, plus their friends and family, who want to learn more about support for unpaid carers.

Readers looking at similar Carers Week activity elsewhere can also see how free support events for unpaid carers are being promoted in other parts of the country.

Benefits, emergency plans and housing advice on offer

The council says carers will be able to ask questions and get information on money and benefits, emergency planning, housing options and other forms of assistance.

The local Carers Support Service combines face-to-face help, phone support and online guidance for unpaid carers of all ages. It is intended to help people who may not always identify themselves as carers, even when they provide regular practical or emotional support at home.

Milton Keynes City Council estimates there could be 21,000 unpaid carers in MK, including young carers looking after family members who could not cope without their help.

The event will also give carers a chance to meet others in similar situations. Light refreshments will be available throughout the session for guests.

Parking and practical details for attendees

There is limited free parking outside Simpson Day Centre on Simpson Road. The council says several other carparks are within a few minutes’ walk.
