Man seriously hurt in M74 attack near Lesmahagow

A 63-year-old man remains in hospital with serious injuries after what Police Scotland believes was a targeted attack on a group of motorcyclists on the M74 near Lesmahagow. Detectives are trying to identify those responsible and trace vehicles that left the scene.

Emergency services were called at about 1pm on Sunday, 2 August 2026, following a serious assault and disturbance between junctions 10 and 11. Police said the incident involved a group of motorcyclists and people travelling in four vehicles.

Victim remains in hospital with serious injuries

The injured man was taken to hospital after the assault and remains there for treatment. Police have not released further information about his condition beyond describing his injuries as serious. No arrests were announced in the appeal issued after the incident.

Detective Sergeant Craig Wait said members of the public who witnessed the disturbance were among those left shaken. He said investigators believe the group of motorcyclists was deliberately targeted and that tracing the people responsible is vital.

Police are continuing enquiries to establish the full sequence of events, including how the motorcyclists and occupants of the four vehicles came to be involved in the disturbance.

A red Mazda believed to have been involved was subsequently recovered in the Ayrshire area. Its rear window had been smashed.

The other vehicles have not been traced, and Police Scotland has not provided their makes, models, colours or registration details. Detectives are therefore seeking sightings that could help establish their movements before the assault or their routes after leaving the M74.

Officers also want information about the group of motorcyclists before the disturbance. The appeal is not limited to people who witnessed the assault itself: motorists may have seen the motorcycles, the Red Mazda or the other vehicles elsewhere near junctions 10 and 11.

Dashcam footage could assist the investigation

Anyone who was travelling on the M74 near Lesmahagow around the time of the incident is being asked to review any dashcam footage. Police want to hear from people whose recordings may show the motorcyclists, the vehicles, the disturbance or activity before and after it.
