Huddersfield Library users face a temporary service switch: key details
Huddersfield Library will close temporarily from Sunday 30 August while its services move to the new Our Cultural Heart Library, which is scheduled to open on Monday 21 September. Residents can use other Kirklees Libraries during the closure, while a limited range of services will remain available at Civic Centre 3.
Closure runs from 30 August to 21 September
| Date | Service change |
|---|---|
| Sunday 30 August | Temporary closure and interim arrangements begin |
| Monday 21 September | Our Cultural Heart Library is due to open |
The arrangements were set out in a Kirklees Council notice published on 28 August 2026. No opening time for the new library was specified.
Nearby libraries remain open during the move
The nearest alternatives named by Kirklees Council are:
- Almondbury Library Hub
- Birkby and Fartown Library
- Chestnut Centre in Deighton
- Lindley Library
- Rawthorpe and Dalton Library
Residents may also use Library Hubs in Batley, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Dewsbury, Heckmondwike, Holmfirth, Kirkburton and Ravensthorpe’s Greenwood Centre. Opening hours vary, so customers should check the Kirklees Libraries website before travelling or call the library team for help finding the closest branch.
Civic Centre 3 keeps limited services running
Civic Centre 3 will not provide the full Huddersfield Library Hub service. During the move, visitors can:

- Return library books and Carephones equipment using dedicated drop boxes.
- Use public computers and telephones to access council services.
- Access planning and personal-search software on designated computers.
- Use the self-scan station.
Client Financial Affairs customers whose money is managed by Kirklees Council can still obtain emergency support at Civic Centre 3 if a pre-payment card is lost. Eligible Local Welfare Provision customers without email can have energy vouchers printed at any Library Hub. Those unable to travel to another hub can arrange collection from Civic Centre 3.
Regular library services move to other branches
Other Kirklees libraries will continue offering book borrowing and returns, reserved-item collection, library membership, printing, photocopying and study space. Staff support for online resources, family history and local studies will also remain available, alongside newspapers, magazines, activities and community events.
Services not included in the limited Civic Centre 3 offer should be accessed through another Library Hub during the closure.
