Hounslow names new mayor with dementia charity focus: what residents need to know
Hounslow Council has appointed Councillor Ranjit Gill as Mayor of Hounslow for the 2026-27 civic year, with Councillor Sahibaa Hussain named as Deputy Mayor.
Councillor Gill, who has lived in the borough for more than 40 years, now represents Osterley and Spring Grove ward after the May 2026 local elections. He was first elected to the council in May 2018 for Chiswick Gunnersbury ward.
The mayoral role is largely ceremonial, with duties including representing the council at civic events, supporting community organisations and acting as an ambassador for the borough.
Ranjit Gill’s council and community work
During his time on Hounslow Council, Councillor Gill has served on several committees and panels, including Audit and Governance, Licensing, the Housing and Environment Scrutiny Panel and the Pension Board.
Outside council work, he has volunteered with Café Together, supporting homeless and vulnerable residents, and has taken part in community clean-up initiatives. The council said he has a particular interest in protecting and improving green spaces, shaped by his love of wildlife and nature shared with his late partner, Peter.
Councillor Hussain, who will support him as Deputy Mayor, represents Hounslow Heath ward.

Dementia services chosen for mayoral charity
Councillor Gill has chosen Age UK Hounslow Dementia Services as his charity for the mayoral year.
The service supports residents living with dementia and memory challenges, along with carers and family members. Its work includes a free Dementia Station in Feltham, where weekly sessions offer dementia-friendly activities such as singing, music, storytelling and art.
Councillor Gill said it was “a great honour” to serve as Mayor of Hounslow, adding that he looked forward to meeting residents, celebrating community work and promoting causes across the borough.
Council leader Councillor Shantanu Rajawat said Councillor Gill brought experience, a commitment to public service and a focus on local communities and the environment. Further details about the mayor’s charity work and upcoming civic engagements are expected to be announced by the council in due course.
