Salford residents and other local stakeholders can now comment on the city’s proposed Local Plan, which will guide decisions about homes, employment sites, infrastructure and protected green spaces until 2043.

The free eight-week consultation opened on Friday, 31 July 2026 and closes at 4:30pm on Friday, 25 September 2026. Materials can be viewed online or in person at the Civic Centre in Swinton, as well as at some libraries and Gateway Centres across Salford.

According to Salford City Council News, this is the final consultation stage before the proposed plan moves towards council approval and independent examination.

Where and how residents can participate

Residents can choose the form of participation that best suits them:

Online: The consultation documents are available digitally for people who want to examine the proposals remotely.
At local venues: Printed materials can be inspected at the Civic Centre in Swinton and at participating libraries and Gateway Centres.
With guidance: The council is arranging a drop-in session and offering telephone appointments with planning officers. These are intended to help people navigate the planning documents and ask questions about the process.

What the proposed Local Plan covers

The plan identifies sites for development and sets policies that would guide future planning decisions in different Salford neighbourhoods. Its minimum development requirements for the period from 2022 to 2043 include:

34,818 net additional homes
268,000 square metres of new office floorspace
584,000 square metres of new industrial and warehousing floorspace

The publication plan also includes 16 proposed development allocations across the city. Alongside provision for homes and employment, it proposes designating 12 Local Green Spaces. Named locations include Kersal Moor, Peel Park, Kersal Wetlands, Roe Green and Worsley Green; the designation would give qualifying sites protection equivalent to Green Belt status.

For residents, this means the consultation is an opportunity to comment on both the overall scale of development and the proposals affecting particular sites or neighbourhoods. Responses can address the locations identified, the policies that would apply to future development and the proposed protection of important green spaces.

What happens after comments close

The council intends to take this version of the plan to Full Council for approval in November 2026. If approved, it is due to be submitted to the Secretary of State for examination in December 2026.

All comments received during the consultation will be submitted alongside the plan and will help inform its examination by an independent planning inspector. Anyone wishing their views to form part of that process must submit feedback by 4:30pm on 25 September 2026.
