Cumbria’s adult learning programme for the 2026/27 academic year is now available online, giving residents access to qualifications, employment skills and community-based classes. Printed brochures will also be distributed through six main learning centres, major libraries and partner organisations.

Courses cover qualifications, hobbies and wellbeing

Cumbria Adult Learning offers qualification routes in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages, digital skills, employability, health and wellbeing, and its greener curriculum.

Learners can start at Entry Level and progress through Level 1 or Level 2. The programme also includes non-qualification courses in subjects such as arts and crafts, languages, health and wellbeing, allowing residents to learn recreationally without working towards a formal award.

Previous qualifications are not required

Applicants do not need existing qualifications to begin the listed skills and qualification courses. Tutors provide support throughout each course, including help with setting goals and tracking progress.

All skills courses are free. Other classes may be free or offered at a subsidised price, depending on the course and the learner’s circumstances; terms and conditions apply.

Cumbria residents gain a new route into skills

Cumbria Adult Learning is rated Good overall by Ofsted, with two areas graded Outstanding. According to the service, 98% of learners were satisfied with their course and 97% said it met their expectations.

Brochures will be available across Cumbria

Printed course guides can be collected from the main Cumbria Adult Learning centres in Carlisle, Workington, Whitehaven, Barrow, Kendal and Penrith. Copies will also be placed in major libraries and with selected partner organisations, while a digital version is available online.

The service is hosted by Westmorland and Furness Council on behalf of the whole county, so residents across both local authority areas can use the programme.

Residents should begin by searching the Cumbria Adult Learning website for a suitable subject and finding their nearest centre. The council’s announcement does not specify a single programme-wide enrolment deadline, so learners should check the details and availability of their chosen class before registering or contacting the local centre.
