For readers comparing local commemorations, our guide to another free Armed Forces Day parade shows how towns and cities are marking the same national weekend.
Service at Holy Trinity Church before parade into Broadgate
The Coventry programme starts inside Holy Trinity Church at 10.30am. After the service, the parade will move into Broadgate for a short public tribute between 11.30am and 11.45am.
The parade will be led by the 13th Coventry Scout Band. The march-past is expected to feature members of the wider Armed Forces community, including those with past, present and future links to service.
Lord Mayor of the City of Coventry, Cllr Roger Bailey, will take the salute. He has named the Royal British Legion Coventry Branch as one of his chosen charities for his year in office.
Why Coventry is gathering in Broadgate
Armed Forces Day is designed as a public moment of thanks for serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and the families who support them. The Coventry event gives residents a central place to gather, rather than leaving the national tribute as something marked only at a distance.
Cllr Bailey said the day carries a personal meaning for many families in the city, including his own. He referred to his granddad’s service in the 1920s, his father’s National Service and family links to the Navy through Lady Mayoress Pauline’s grandfather and uncle.
He said: “This day gives us all a chance to join together and show our pride – in our family members, and in all those who bravely serve, their families who support them, and the reservists, veterans and cadets.”
Cllr Linda Bigham, Armed Forces Champion for the Council, said people should attend and cheer if they can, adding that the Armed Forces “are there for us whenever and wherever they are needed”.
Flag raising and Armed Forces Week context
On the day, the Armed Forces Day flag will be raised on buildings and famous landmarks across the country. In Coventry, the Council House will be among the buildings taking part.
Armed Forces Day also marks the end of a wider week of celebrations, which includes Reserves Day on 24 June. Coventry is a member of the Armed Forces Covenant, a promise to support current and former service personnel and their families.
Anyone planning to attend should note the two public timings: the Holy Trinity Church service starts at 10.30am, and the Broadgate parade is scheduled for 11.30am to 11.45am.
