Liverpool residents will be offered free FibroScan liver health checks this June as part of the BSG LIVE 2026 Public Health Engagement Programme, a public-facing initiative linked to the British Society of Gastroenterology’s flagship annual conference.

The programme will run while BSG LIVE 2026 is in the city from 22 to 25 June. A related public exhibit, Colin the Colon, will be installed at Metquarter Liverpool on Sunday 21 June. The liver checks are free, with booking details due to be shared closer to the event.

The health checks will use FibroScan testing, described by the organisers as quick, non-invasive and painless. The aim is to identify early signs of liver disease before symptoms appear, giving people a chance to seek treatment, advice or lifestyle support earlier.

The initiative is being delivered by Liverpool Experience Campus (LEX) with The British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), British Liver Trust, Liverpool Convention Bureau and Liverpool City Council’s Public Health team.

The source announcement says liver disease is now the third leading cause of premature death in the UK, while around 90% of cases are preventable. Alcohol-related liver disease is highlighted as one of the few major causes of death still rising among people under 75, often developing silently until damage has become serious.

That is the practical reason the programme is being taken beyond the conference floor and into the city. BSG LIVE is a professional gathering, but this part of the week is aimed at public engagement and early awareness for local people.

The wider programme includes Colin the Colon, the inflatable interactive exhibit from Guts UK, at Metquarter Liverpool on Sunday 21 June.

The exhibit is designed to help people of all ages understand digestive health in a more accessible and memorable way. Its placement in Metquarter Liverpool puts one of the conference’s public-facing elements in a central city location rather than keeping the discussion inside a closed professional setting.

Organisers say the programme is supported by LEX’s Legacy Strategy, which is intended to help major events leave benefits for the Liverpool City Region after delegates have gone home.

Health leaders point to early detection

A spokesperson for The British Society of Gastroenterology said the organisation was “delighted to be helping to create a legacy that will last well beyond our conference”, adding that the initiative reflects BSG’s wider commitment to prevention, early diagnosis and public engagement.

Cllr Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture at Liverpool City Council, said liver disease is “one of the most significant and preventable health challenges we face in Liverpool”. He said free liver health checks in the community could help people understand risk and act earlier.

Professor Matt Ashton, Director of Public Health for Liverpool, said liver disease often develops silently, making early detection critical. He said FibroScan testing in community settings gives people an opportunity to identify issues before they become serious and access the right advice and support.

Adrian Evans, Director of Sales for Conference & Business Events at Liverpool Experience Campus, said the project reflects LEX’s work with organisers to ensure conferences leave something meaningful behind for the city.

How residents can take part

People interested in the free liver health checks should watch for booking details, which organisers say will be shared closer to the event. No start times or end times have yet been confirmed in the source announcement.

The confirmed public exhibit date is Sunday 21 June at Metquarter Liverpool. BSG LIVE 2026 then takes place from 22 to 25 June, with the public health programme running alongside the conference period.

Anyone unable to access a scan during the event, or anyone already concerned about liver health, is encouraged to speak to their GP or local pharmacy. The source also points residents worried about their own drinking or someone else’s to River, Liverpool’s commissioned drug and alcohol treatment service, which offers free and confidential support by phone on 0151 706 7888.
