Making art while learning how galleries work

Participants create their own artwork while gaining experience behind the scenes of exhibitions and events. That gives the group a practical focus beyond viewing work already displayed in the gallery.

ArtForum also forms the first stage of a longer creative development route. Members can progress into MORE ART INC, an incubator for emerging artists aged 16 to 30 from Wolverhampton and surrounding areas. That programme is designed to help participants understand and navigate the creative industries.

The council says participants across the youth programme come from varied demographic and economic backgrounds, often without previous experience of galleries or artistic practice. Some have continued their development through exhibitions and residencies at arts organisations elsewhere in the UK.

A £100,000 award backs the youth programme

ArtForum and MORE ART INC were jointly recognised in the inaugural Freelands Awards 2026. Wolverhampton Art Gallery was one of three organisations selected to receive £100,000, alongside The Burton at Bideford in North Devon and SIGNAL in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

The awards form part of a £1.5 million Freelands Foundation scheme celebrating visual art education over five years. Judges chose the winners after reviewing entries from UK galleries and arts organisations and visiting a shortlisted group in person.

Judging panel chair Dr Henry Ward said the selected programmes demonstrated collaborative approaches rooted in their local communities. Council leader Stephen Simkins said the Wolverhampton programmes had helped young people who previously felt galleries were not places where they belonged to pursue creative careers.

Wolverhampton Art Gallery will also work with the foundation on case-study films intended to share its approach with other organisations.
