All Shades of Brown in Leicester: free until 29 August
Oil portraiture and fine-art photography come together in All Shades of Brown Presents Abigaiél Rose & Sunny Gill, a free contemporary art exhibition at Leicester Gallery, De Montfort University, from Sunday 23 to Saturday 29 August 2026.
The seven-day exhibition is likely to interest visitors drawn to art exploring identity, culture, memory, belonging and personal experience. Visit Leicester Events lists the show as free and names Opal22, working in partnership with De Montfort University, as its presenter.
New work follows the artists’ earlier exhibition
Abigaiél Rose and Sunny Gill are two emerging Midlands artists who participated in Opal22’s earlier All Shades of Brown exhibition in 2026. Their return to Leicester Gallery introduces new bodies of work rather than simply repeating that presentation.
The new exhibition retains the broader themes associated with their earlier appearance while giving each artist space to approach them through a different medium. Painting and photography are placed alongside one another to consider identity, memory, culture and lived experience.
Oil portraits and observed everyday moments
Rose’s contribution centres on oil portraits celebrating Black identity, beauty and cultural memory. Her use of portraiture puts people and representation at the centre of the work, connecting individual figures with wider questions of belonging.
Gill works through fine-art photography, capturing everyday moments that reflect on time, place and personal experience. Seen together, the artists’ work offers two distinct routes into related subjects: Rose through the human figure and Gill through observations of ordinary moments and surroundings.

The pairing gives visitors a focused two-artist exhibition rather than a broad group show. Its central point of connection is visual storytelling, with each artist examining how identity and experience can be represented through a still image.
