York Museum Gardens will host its first city-centre dog show on Sunday 20 September 2026, running from 10am to 4pm. Admission costs £2 for children and £5 for adults, with dog owners, families and anyone interested in dogs invited to attend.

The York Museum Gardens Dog Show is being organised by York Museums Trust in partnership with York Dog Park. Visitors can enter their dogs in competitions on the day, while author and television personality Amanda Owen will judge the classes.

Amanda Owen will judge the garden competitions

The competition programme ranges from Handsomest Dog and Fanciest Female to Cutest Puppy and Best Trick. The mix of appearance and performance classes gives owners several ways to take part rather than limiting the event to a conventional show ring.

Owen, known for her Yorkshire Shepherdess television appearances and writing, said she was looking forward to meeting the dogs and their owners in York. The organiser has not published a timetable for the individual classes, so visitors should not assume that a particular category will begin at a set time.

Entries for the dog show will be accepted on the day. The announcement does not state whether entering a competition involves any charge beyond the event admission ticket.

Training demonstrations, expert talks and a shopping village

Activities will continue around the gardens throughout the six-hour event. Dog-training workshops and agility demonstrations are planned, including bale racing, alongside a Have-a-Go Dog Park where visitors and their dogs can participate.

Information stalls and talks from veterinary experts will offer a more practical side to the programme. Professional dog photographers will also work at the event, using York Museum Gardens as the backdrop.

A pop-up shopping village will bring together local vendors selling dog treats, toys and accessories. Food and drink will be available for human visitors, making the programme suitable for families planning to spend more than a short period at the gardens.

Jocelyn Palmer, senior events manager at York Museums Trust, said the aim was to bring pet owners, experts, businesses, trainers and photographers together in one place. She described the event as a full-day gathering for families and the wider dog-loving community.

Ticket prices and details to check before travelling

Adult admission is £5, while a child ticket costs £2. Tickets can be purchased online through the York Museums Trust ticketing service, and competition entries will be taken at the event.

The organiser’s announcement does not provide transport instructions or accessibility information. Visitors who require those details will need to check the latest information from York Museums Trust before travelling.

The confirmed programme runs from 10am until 4pm at York Museum Gardens on 20 September, with admission tickets available online and dog-show registration taking place on the day.
