York Museum Gardens will host York’s first city-centre dog show on Sunday 20 September, running from 10am to 4pm. The event is aimed at families and dog owners, with admission priced at £5 for adults and £2 for children. Entering a dog in a competition costs a further £2 per category.

Organised by York Museum Gardens in partnership with York Dog Park, the day combines judged competitions with agility activities, training sessions, grooming guidance and stalls for pets and their owners. Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen will host and judge the main Dog Show Competition.

Two chances to enter the dog competitions

The announced awards include Handsomest Dog, Fanciest Female, Cutest Puppy and Best Trick. The organisers have scheduled morning and afternoon competitions, giving visitors two opportunities to take part during the day.

Competition places cannot be reserved in advance. Owners must sign up when they arrive, with entries allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The £2 registration charge applies to each dog in each category, so entering the same dog in more than one contest will require a separate payment for every category.

The structure leaves owners free to decide on the day whether their dog is ready for the show ring. It also makes arrival time relevant for anyone determined to secure a competition place, as no advance-entry option has been announced.

Agility, scent work and grooming throughout the day

Away from the judged contests, technical agility classes and scent-work workshops will run periodically. True Pawtential will lead interactive sessions covering general obedience training, while Pampered Paws will provide guided grooming tips.

Dogs can use the agility equipment in the “Have a Go” Dog Park throughout the event. A separate bale-racing competition is scheduled between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.

Dog photographers will be present to capture activity in the gardens and offer posed pet shoots. The programme also includes a pop-up shopping village with treats, toys and accessories, alongside informative stalls and guidance from veterinary experts. Food vendors will sell snacks and treats for both people and pets.

Tickets and same-day entry in York

Admission tickets can be bought online before the event. They will also be available on Sunday 20 September from York Art Gallery and the Yorkshire Museum.
