Wolverhampton free family bike ride returns on 13 June

A marshalled 4.5-mile family bike ride will set off from East Park next Saturday as Wolverhampton Kidical Mass returns for its third annual cycling event and fun day.

The free event takes place on Saturday 13 June from 11am to 3pm at East Park, Wolverhampton. It is aimed at families and children, with free registration available through Eventbrite. Riders need to bring roadworthy bikes, and helmets are advised.

East Park hosts a four-hour family cycling day

Wolverhampton Kidical Mass 2026 is being organised by No Limits to Health and City of Wolverhampton Council, with a programme built around confidence-building cycling for children and families.

The ride itself is due to be started at about 12.30pm by Hugh Porter MBE, the city’s cycling ambassador, Commonwealth Games gold medallist and former world champion cyclist.

The route is described as gentle and marshalled. It will run from East Park around the heart of Wolverhampton and back, taking in landmarks including Molineux where possible and using cycle lanes developed by the council where the route allows.

Bike skills, repairs and entertainment in the park

The cycling event and fun day is not limited to the 4.5-mile ride. East Park will host stalls, refreshments and live entertainment across the day, alongside activities for people who want to try cycling, improve skills or check their bikes.

The programme includes cycling skills sessions, bike repair workshops, a Lime bike experience zone showcasing electric pedal hire bikes, and a free chance to use the East Park Cycle Speedway track.

The event also falls during a wider week of cycling and environmental activity. Similar community events are being held around the country to coincide with The Great Big Green Week, which runs from 6 to 14 June, and Bike Week, which runs from 8 to 14 June.

Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, Cabinet Member for City Transport at City of Wolverhampton Council, said the event gives children and families a chance to build confidence riding together on public roads and cycle lanes.

West Midlands Active Travel Commissioner Beccy Marston said Kidical Mass brings communities together and gives local families a guided way to explore Wolverhampton’s growing cycle network.

What families need before taking part

Participants should bring a roadworthy bike if they want to join the ride. Everyone is advised to wear a helmet.

Bike marshals will accompany riders along the route, but younger children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children in East Park must also be accompanied by an adult.

The event is supported by West Midlands Combined Authority and Transport for West Midlands, Cycling UK, British Cycling and the Walk, Wheel, Cycle Trust, among others. It is made possible with UK Government funding.

Free registration is available through Eventbrite for Wolverhampton Kidical Mass 2026, taking place at East Park on Saturday 13 June from 11am to 3pm.
