Tonypandy memorial plans: free drop-ins on 4 September
Tonypandy residents can examine plans to reshape the area around the town’s war memorial at two free consultation sessions on Friday 4 September 2026. The drop-ins are open to local residents, businesses, community groups and anyone interested in Tonypandy’s heritage.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council officers will be at Tonypandy Market from 10am to 2pm, followed by a second session at Tonypandy Library from 3pm to 7pm. Visitors will be able to view the proposals, ask questions and give feedback in person.
Two consultation sessions across Tonypandy
The day has been split between two town-centre venues, giving residents an afternoon and an evening opportunity to participate.

Attendance is free, and both sessions are described as drop-in events. The council notice does not provide transport or event-accessibility information, and it lists no separate booking process.
The consultation concerns proposals rather than confirmed final works. Feedback gathered during the sessions will therefore give residents a chance to respond before the improvement plans progress further.
Relocation and landscaping are among the proposals
One of the central ideas is to relocate the World War I memorial from the grounds of Livingway Church. It would be placed in a more accessible position above the existing Tonypandy War Memorial, bringing the two commemorative elements closer together.
The wider scheme could also re-landscape the surrounding area, create accessible planting spaces and remove the wrought-iron fencing around the existing memorial. These elements remain proposed changes, and residents attending the drop-ins will be able to discuss them directly with council officers.
The work draws on Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s five-year, £250,000 war memorial investment programme, which runs from 2022 to 2027. Funding from the UK Government’s Pride in Place Impact Fund is also being used for the Tonypandy proposals.
That investment sits alongside the council’s War Memorial Digitisation Project, which researches and shares the stories of people commemorated on memorials across Rhondda Cynon Taf. The authority says the physical improvements are intended to preserve the site while making its setting more accessible for future generations.
Families can add names and stories to a Roll of Honour
The consultation day will also serve as a gathering point for a new Tonypandy Roll of Honour. The council’s Heritage Service wants information about relatives and local residents from Tonypandy and surrounding communities who were killed during conflict.
Visitors may bring names, photographs, documents or family stories to either session. This material will help the Heritage Service identify and record people whose connections to the area might otherwise be absent from the developing record.
Councillor Maureen Webber BEM, the council’s Deputy Leader and Armed Forces Champion, has encouraged families and residents with relevant material to share it. She said the aim is to ensure that people from Tonypandy and the surrounding area who lost their lives in conflict are properly remembered.
How to contribute if you cannot attend
Anyone unable to visit Tonypandy Market or Tonypandy Library on 4 September can still submit material for the Roll of Honour. Names, photographs, documents and family accounts can be sent to HeritageService@rctcbc.gov.uk.
The same address can be used to contact the Heritage Service about its memorial work. For residents who want to discuss the physical proposals themselves, the confirmed in-person opportunities remain the Market session from 10am to 2pm and the Library session from 3pm to 7pm.
