Toll of Birness junction safety plans open for public feedback

Residents, local businesses, and regular commuters are being invited to share their views on proposed safety improvements for the Toll of Birness junction on the A90 north of Ellon.

Aberdeenshire Council and Nestrans have launched a formal consultation to address long-standing safety concerns at the junction, which serves as a critical link for the north-east’s road network. The primary objective of the proposed upgrades is to reduce the risk of collisions and improve traffic flow, particularly for freight operators and public transport serving the port towns of Peterhead and Fraserburgh.

Public Exhibition Details

To facilitate community input, a public drop-in exhibition will be held in September. This event provides an opportunity for road users to view the preliminary design options, including potential roundabout configurations for the A90/A952 junction, and to discuss the plans directly with project representatives.

Consultation and Project Background

These proposals represent the culmination of several years of collaborative work between Aberdeenshire Council, Nestrans, and Transport Scotland. The designs have been evaluated using the Scottish Transport Appraisal Guidance (STAG) to ensure they meet rigorous safety, sustainability, and economic criteria.

Beyond immediate safety benefits, the council aims to future-proof the junction to accommodate planned regional growth, including new housing and commercial developments. The findings gathered during this consultation period will be shared with Transport Scotland to help refine the preferred design options and ensure that community priorities are integrated into the next stages of the project.

For those unable to attend the drop-in event, an online survey is available for public participation until September 18, 2026. The survey and further technical project details can be accessed through the official Aberdeenshire Council engagement portal.
