Storm Boelo puts Aberdeenshire journeys at risk this weekend

Strong waves crash against a rocky shoreline near a large, grassy coastal hill.

An Amber wind warning for Storm Boelo covers most of Scotland, including Aberdeenshire, on Saturday and Sunday, October 24 and 25. Heavy rain is also expected. Check the latest travel and weather updates before setting out, avoid unnecessary journeys and allow extra time if travel cannot be avoided.

The Met Office warning means strong winds could disrupt road, rail, air and ferry services, with cancellations, longer journeys and restrictions on bridges or other exposed routes possible. Conditions may vary across Aberdeenshire.

When the warning applies across Aberdeenshire

The warning covers Saturday and Sunday, October 24 and 25, across most of Scotland. Aberdeenshire Council says its teams will monitor conditions over the weekend and respond to issues where it is safe to do so.

Persistent rain is expected on Friday afternoon and evening. Road surface temperatures are forecast to start falling in the early hours of Saturday, and the council plans to begin winter treatment on most primary routes from 5am.

Travel disruption and local hazards

Strong winds and heavy rain may bring large waves, flying debris, fallen trees and localised flooding. Road, rail, air and ferry journeys may take longer or be cancelled; exposed bridges and routes may face restrictions. Check with your transport operator before travelling.

Flood risk is expected to remain elevated through the weekend and into next week, according to SEPA. Rivers and burns may rise quickly, so keep well back from flooded banks and fast-flowing water. The clocks go back at 2am on Sunday, October 25.

Steps to take before conditions worsen

Secure loose items around your home, including bins, garden furniture and trampolines. Prepare for the possibility of power disruption.

Avoid coastal paths and clifftops: breaking waves can sweep people off their feet, even from the shore. Stay out of woodland and forestry areas where possible, as trees and branches may fall in high winds.

Do not attempt to clear fallen trees. To report a fallen tree on the road network, call 03456 081205 during office hours or Police Scotland on 101 out of hours. The council says it and its contractors may be unable to clear trees safely during high winds or in darkness. Call 999 in an emergency.

Where to check updates and get help

Check SEPA’s flood updates and Aberdeenshire Council’s social media for local information. For travel, check the latest Met Office warnings and ScotRail updates; other operators may also post service changes.

Useful numbers: call 105 to report a power outage to SSEN, 111 for non-urgent medical issues, 03456 081203 for emergency council housing repairs, and 03456 081206 for emergency social care.
