Sefton names its new food waste recycling fleet

By demoduck.co.uk, based on Sefton Council information.

Sefton residents, schoolchildren and council staff have put their stamp on the borough’s new food waste recycling vehicles after more than 200 entries were submitted to a local naming competition.

Fourteen winning names have now been chosen for the fleet, which will be used as Sefton Council prepares to introduce food waste recycling collections this winter.

Fourteen names chosen for the new vehicles

The winning names set to appear on the food waste recycling vehicles are:

  • Bingo Starr
  • Captain Compost
  • Eleanor Binby
  • Gordon Binit
  • Paddy the Caddy
  • Scrapasaurus Rex
  • The Green Machine
  • The Sefton Scrapper

Some names were submitted by more than one entrant. The final choices include ideas from school pupils, Sefton residents and council employees.

Residents and pupils helped shape the fleet

The judging panel included Sefton Council leader Cllr Marion Atkinson, Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Street Scene Cllr Peter Harvey, and operational staff.

Cllr Atkinson said the council had received “so many creative ideas” from the community, including schoolchildren, and congratulated the winners. Cllr Harvey said choosing 14 names had been difficult because of the range of entries received.

The competition gives the new vehicles a visible local identity before they begin appearing on streets across the borough.

Food waste collections are due this winter

Sefton Council said the vehicles will support the introduction of the borough’s new food waste recycling service. The rollout had originally been expected from April 1, but the council said it could not meet that date because of national pressure on vehicle, equipment and material supply.

Councils across the country have been preparing for similar food waste collection changes, including new weekly food waste collections in Wolverhampton and food waste recycling reminders in Bexley.

Sefton Council said food caddies have already arrived in the borough and are being stored ahead of distribution to residents.
