Scarborough Armed Forces Day: free June parade guide

Scarborough will host a free Armed Forces Day celebration on Saturday, 27 June, with a full programme of air displays, parades, music and family activities running from 11am to 5pm.

The public event is being staged in Scarborough by North Yorkshire Council and is aimed at residents, visitors, veterans, service families, cadets and serving personnel. Thousands are expected in the Yorkshire coast resort for one of the region’s largest Armed Forces celebrations.

For readers planning a day out, the biggest draw is the flying schedule: six confirmed aerial displays, including the RAF Chinook, RAF Supermarine Spitfire and a headline RAF Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 display late in the afternoon.

Scarborough’s free Armed Forces Day runs from 11am

The main Scarborough Armed Forces Day programme begins at 11am and continues until 5pm on Saturday, 27 June. Entry is free and the event is described as a public celebration.

North Yorkshire Council is hosting the day as part of its Armed Forces Covenant work. Council leader Cllr Carl Les said the event is “a show of unity, pride and community spirit” and part of a national day of events supporting serving troops, service families, veterans and cadets.

A separate flag-raising will take place at Scarborough Town Hall on Monday, 22 June, led by Army Cadets. The council says this will mark the official opening of the event.

Air display times confirmed over the Yorkshire coast

The flying programme begins shortly after the event opens, with the RAF Chinook scheduled for an 11.30am flypast. The Chinook is one of the RAF’s most recognisable aircraft and is capable of carrying troops or heavy cargo loads.

At 11.40am, the RAF Tutor T Mark 1 is due to perform a precision display. The afternoon schedule then brings a Hawker Fury at 1.30pm, followed by the Calidus AutoGyro at 2.30pm.

One of the most familiar names in the programme arrives at 3.30pm, when the RAF Supermarine Spitfire is scheduled to return to Scarborough’s skies. The final confirmed aerial display is the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 at 4.05pm, billed by the council as the day’s headline display.

Veterans’ parade, cadets and military music on the ground

The programme is not only in the air. On the ground, Scarborough Armed Forces Day will include traditional military marches, band displays, presentations and live music during the afternoon.

Scarborough Sea Cadets are among those due to take part. Veterans, standards and cadets’ parades will be led by the Queen’s Own Yeomanry and the Yorkshire Volunteers Band.

This year’s attractions also include a Chelsea Pensioners display, which North Yorkshire Council says will be their first appearance at Scarborough Armed Forces Day.

Cllr Kevin Foster, the council’s Armed Forces champion, said the day gives residents and visitors a chance to show appreciation for currently serving personnel, veterans, cadets and their families.

Why North Yorkshire is a fitting host

The event sits in a county with deep military links. North Yorkshire has more than 12,000 people working for the Ministry of Defence and 3,000 children from service families in schools.

Catterick Garrison is one of the largest military bases in the country, while the county also has barracks at Dishforth, Ripon and Topcliffe. Royal Air Force stations at Leeming, Fylingdales and Menwith Hill are also in North Yorkshire, alongside the Army Foundation College in Harrogate.

The county was among the first places in the UK to have an Armed Forces Covenant, intended to help military personnel and veterans access services across the private and public sectors.
