Milton Keynes City Council has marked Volunteers’ Week by recognising local people who give their time to support families at the city’s Family Centres.

Staff from the council’s Family Centres hosted a special lunch and awards presentation for volunteers during Volunteers’ Week, which runs from 1 to 7 June. More than 50 volunteers work alongside centre staff across 10 centres used by thousands of residents each month.
Volunteers help keep Family Centres running
The Family Centres welcome more than 5,000 residents each month and remain open throughout the year. They offer activities and courses for families with children, as well as support for adults.

Volunteers help with everyday work that keeps the centres accessible, including welcoming visitors, setting up group activities, answering phones and gardening. Some also support the local Community Larder by organising and distributing food and household essentials to residents who need extra help.
Local roles have opened new paths
For some volunteers, the role has also become a route back into confidence, work or training. RJ, a volunteer at Moorlands Family Centre, said the opportunity came at a time of isolation and helped build confidence and new connections. RJ is now working part-time at the centre.

Maria, who volunteers at Hedgerows Family Centre, said the experience had been positive and rewarding, and had encouraged her to pursue a career in childcare.
Council thanks more than 50 volunteers
Councillor Peter Cannon, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said volunteers bring time, care and dedication to the centres and help widen the support available to families across Milton Keynes.
