Councillor Rosaline Ogunro has been sworn in as Mayor of Islington for 2026/27, with St Luke’s Community Centre and Islington Boat Club named as the two charities she will support during her mayoral year.

The St Peter’s and Canalside councillor took office at the Annual Council meeting on Wednesday, 27 May. She succeeds Cllr Jason Jackson, who served as mayor over the previous year and supported Islington Giving as his chosen charity.

Rosaline Ogunro’s council record

Councillor Rosaline Ogunro has represented St Peter’s and Canalside since May 2022. During her time on Islington Council, she has served on committees covering homes and communities scrutiny, children and young people scrutiny, planning, and licensing.

The mayoral role in Islington is a civic post, with the mayor chairing full council meetings, representing the borough at events and using the year in office to raise awareness and funds for selected causes.

At the same Annual Council meeting, Islington Council also formally confirmed its new Executive, led by Council Leader Cllr Una O’Halloran.

Two charities for the mayoral year

St Luke’s Community Centre provides activities for local residents, including lunches, classes and community programmes that bring different generations together.

Islington Boat Club offers water sports activities and training, with courses aimed at young people, people with additional needs and older residents who need extra support. Its work focuses on accessible training and life skills through activity on the water.

Speaking after the mayor-making ceremony, Cllr Ogunro said there was nothing she enjoyed more than helping and serving the community. She said she was looking forward to raising funds for St Luke’s Community Centre and supporting Islington Boat Club during the year.

Civic and family roles confirmed

Cllr Ogunro is also known locally for her music. She has two albums to her name and was a member of the London Symphony Orchestra Community Choir from 2003 to 2022. Her other interests include designing and making clothes.

Her son, Zulu Ogunro, will serve as mayor’s consort for the year. Cllr Chowdhury has been appointed Deputy Mayor, with his wife, Nilu Chowdhury, serving as consort.
