Hull memorials restored as paving work continues
The Paragon Square War Memorial and Boer War Memorial in Hull have been given a specialist conservation clean, revealing the stonework and engraved lettering beneath years of weathering. Work on the surrounding pavements is now continuing, with the memorials and nearby seating area still temporarily fenced off.
Gentle cleaning protects Hull’s memorials
Hull City Council commissioned Fresh Memory Headstone Cleaning and Restoration Service to carry out the delicate work. Because of the memorials’ age and fragile materials, the team used a gentle, non-abrasive conservation method designed to protect the stone and lettering for years to come.
For Joel Haigh, owner of the Hull-based company, the project carried a personal significance. He undertook the work in memory of his late grandfather, Len Wooldridge, who served with the Army Survey Regiment and was part of the second wave to land on Sword Beach on D-Day in June 1944.
Haigh described the commission as “the greatest honour” of his professional career, saying that every name carved into the memorials represented a life, family and story deserving dignity and respect.
Pavement repairs will take up to three weeks
The next phase has been awarded to Hull-based PBS Construction. It includes repairs to the paving units around the memorials and is expected to take approximately three weeks.
The temporary fencing will remain in place while contractors work around the memorials and seating area. Councillor Mark Ieronimo, Hull City Council’s cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, said the wider works would help create a cleaner setting for remembrance and reflection.
