Huddersfield’s new Library Hub opens with a free week
Huddersfield’s new Library Hub will open on Monday 21 September, launching a week of free activities at the hub and the neighbouring Queensgate Square in the town centre. The programme is aimed at all ages, whether visitors regularly use the library, want a family day out or simply wish to explore the new public spaces.
All opening-week activities are free. Visitors can drop in without booking unless the full programme later identifies an individual session that requires advance registration. On Saturday 26 September, the Library Hub will open at 9.30am, while activities in Queensgate Square will run from noon until 5pm.
A first look inside Huddersfield’s new Library Hub
The Library Hub has been designed as a modern space for reading, learning, studying, creative work and meeting other people. During opening week, visitors will be able to explore the building, meet the library team and learn about the services, facilities and regular activities available there.
The hub and Queensgate Square are among the first completed spaces in Huddersfield’s Our Cultural Heart project. Their opening brings library services and a new outdoor gathering space into the same part of the town centre.
Kirklees Council says the week is intended to introduce both spaces through activities rather than a single formal opening event. That gives visitors several opportunities to attend between Monday 21 and Sunday 27 September.
Lego, chess and creative activities fill Saturday’s programme
Saturday’s programme inside the Library Hub begins at 9.30am and continues throughout the day. Confirmed activities include:
- Lego Club and Chess Club
- Knit and Natter
- A family Library Adventures Trail
- Makerspace demonstrations
The wider opening-week programme also includes creative workshops and activities for families. The format allows visitors to see how different parts of the building will be used after the celebrations finish.
Queensgate Square hosts music, games and workshops
From noon to 5pm on Saturday 26 September, Queensgate Square will host live music, arts and crafts, interactive workshops, community art activities and traditional games. Food and drink vendors will also be present.
Celebrations will continue throughout Sunday 27 September, with activities designed for different age groups. Kirklees Council’s announcement also identifies skateboarding sessions among the attractions planned for the first opening weekend.
The weekend will be the first time the completed square is used for a programme of public entertainment. It sits alongside the Library Hub, allowing visitors to move between indoor library activities and events in the new outdoor space.
The opening is the next stage of Our Cultural Heart
Councillor Pip Harvey, Kirklees Council’s Cabinet Member for Place, Volunteering and Culture, described the two openings as a milestone in the wider town-centre project. She said the spaces are intended for reading, learning, events, creative activity and spending time with other people.
Further parts of Our Cultural Heart remain in development. A Food Hall is scheduled to open next year, while work is already under way on the Museum and Art Gallery.
