How a Harrogate mentor earned rare NHS recognition
Harrogate and District NHS News has reported that Neil Thompson has received the prestigious Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Award from NHS England for his work supporting new colleagues on Oakdale Ward.
Thompson was nominated by the Practice Educator Team for his contribution to the Trust’s Care Support Worker Buddy Programme. The nomination recognised his efforts to foster inclusion, build confidence and help new staff settle into their roles from their first day.
A welcome built before the first shift
Thompson created a guide called “Welcome to Your New Work Family” for new starters. He also contacts colleagues personally before they begin, introducing himself, answering questions and helping them feel valued before arriving at work.

Recognition shared across Humber and Yorkshire
Thompson’s nomination was reviewed by a regional panel of Chief Nurses and Support Worker representatives from across Humber and Yorkshire. The panel unanimously recognised the impact of his work.
The award is relatively rare. More than 27,500 support workers are employed across the region, while only 100 people have received the CNO Award during the past five years.
Thompson was presented with the award by Eileen Aylott from NHS England during a surprise celebration attended by Oakdale colleagues, members of the Practice Educator Team and his family.
