Ellon Primary School has been rated “good” across every quality indicator assessed by Education Scotland. Inspectors praised its learning environment, confident pupils and targeted support while identifying two areas where further work is required.

The inspection involved discussions with parents, carers and children, alongside work with headteacher Andrew Boulind and school staff. Aberdeenshire Council published the findings in August 2026.

Inspectors found that senior leaders and staff use professional learning effectively to improve classroom practice and support pupils. This contributes to learning environments described as organised, stimulating and nurturing.

Children were found to be welcoming, confident and proud of Ellon Primary School. The report said they are respected members of the school community who demonstrate its values through their learning, play and interactions.

Pupils also participate enthusiastically in clubs, committees and activities inside and outside school. Inspectors said this involvement helps them develop as learners and contribute positively to school life.

Targeted teaching is improving attainment

Senior leaders and staff regularly review children’s progress and plan targeted teaching where additional support is needed. According to the inspection findings, this approach is improving attainment in literacy and numeracy.

Boulind said the report reflected the work of the entire school community. He welcomed the recognition given to pupils, staff and the learning environment, adding that the school remained committed to helping every child achieve their potential.

Two priorities for further improvement

Inspectors asked the school to continue embedding consistently high-quality approaches to learning and teaching. The aim is to ensure teachers respond effectively to the varying learning needs of all children.

The second priority is continued improvement in literacy and numeracy attainment. Senior leaders must ensure that staff provide an appropriate level of support and challenge for every pupil as the school takes forward the agreed areas for development with Aberdeenshire Council.
