Derby’s Pentagon Island to get green makeover: What drivers should know
Work is set to begin on a major transformation of the Pentagon Island gateway in Derby, with the site being reimagined as a sustainable, native-species green space. The project, led by Derby City Council in partnership with local Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and the community group Down to Earth Derby, aims to improve biodiversity while creating a more welcoming entrance to the city.
Project scope and environmental impact
The redesign moves away from traditional ornamental planting in favour of a native species scheme. The new layout will feature trees and shrubs such as hawthorn, field maple, and wild privet, complemented by wildflowers including ox-eye daisies, red campion, and foxgloves.

Beyond the planting, the project includes a new mural on the wall adjacent to the bridge. According to the council, these native species are chosen for their ability to thrive in local soil conditions with minimal maintenance, while simultaneously supporting local insect, bird, and bat populations that are often displaced in busy urban environments.

Traffic and travel disruption
Drivers travelling through the area should prepare for temporary lane closures while the initial planting takes place. The inside lane of Pentagon Island will be closed to ensure the safety of the work crews during the following window:
| Date | Time | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday 11 August – Friday 14 August | 9:30am – 2:30pm | Inside lane, Pentagon Island |
Long-term maintenance schedule
Following the initial installation, the site will not be left to grow wild without oversight. The delivery partners have committed to a recurring maintenance schedule, with teams returning to the island every spring and autumn to perform seasonal tidy-ups. This approach is intended to ensure the display remains an attractive feature for commuters and visitors throughout the year while meeting the city’s broader climate goals.
