Derby’s historic Duffield Road railings have been restored after a nine-month conservation project brought back the colour, metalwork and detail of a feature first installed in the 1880s.

The Grade II-listed structure sits within the Strutt’s Park Conservation Area, north of Derby city centre, where the raised pavement and railings have long formed part of the street’s 19th-century character.

166 bollards and handmade chains restored

The work covered all 166 bollards, along with the handmade spiked chains and rails. The pieces were removed from Duffield Road and restored by specialists at Calibre Metalworks in Stockport.

The process included blast-cleaning, ironwork repairs and repainting. Specialist conservation paint analysis was used to identify the original colour, allowing the railings to be returned closer to how they would have appeared in the late 19th century.

Whitehouse Construction, a local engineering firm, carried out the works as part of wider improvements around Five Lamps and further along Duffield Road.

A listed feature from Derby’s engineering past

The ironwork was originally cast around 1880 by Derby engineers Chartres & Sons. It formed part of an 1881 project to widen Duffield Road, which created the raised pavement on one side of the road.

Over the decades, many bollards were replaced by other Derby foundries, including Derwent Castings and Browns Foundry Co. The railings are now protected as a listed structure because of that local industrial and streetscape history.

The restoration was supported by funding from the East Midlands Combined County Authority and the Mayor of the East Midlands.

Councillor Carmel Swan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport, and Sustainability, said the railings were “an iconic feature of Duffield Road” and thanked ward councillors, funders, Whitehouse Construction and Calibre Metalworks for their work on the heritage asset.
