Derby evening farmers’ markets open with free entry

Derby Market Hall will host three free summer evening editions of the Derby Farmers’ Market, giving shoppers a later slot for local food, seasonal produce and live music in the city centre.

The Summer evening Farmers’ Markets at Derby Market Hall will run on Friday 19 June, Friday 17 July and Friday 21 August, from 3pm until 9pm. Entry is free and the events are open to the public, with the format aimed at shoppers, after-work visitors, friends meeting in town and anyone looking for a Friday evening food stop.

Derby City Council says the markets are being organised in collaboration with Derby Uncovered, following the popularity of the regular farmers market since its January launch.

The later opening hours are the main change for summer. Instead of a daytime-only market visit, the evening editions give people a chance to call in after work, stay for food and use the Market Hall as part of a Friday night plan.

The council has not announced booking requirements for the evening markets, so the confirmed position from the event brief is free entry and open public access.

Fresh produce, artisanal food and live music

The evening Farmers Market will focus on fresh seasonal produce, artisanal foods and regional flavours. The source describes the events as a relaxed setting shaped around local traders, food and live music.

Visitors will also be able to use the Market Hall’s permanent traders during the evening. The council says shoppers can grab a meal or a drink from the bar while visiting the special market nights.

That mix gives the summer editions a slightly different role from a routine shop. People can still browse food stalls and produce, but the 3pm to 9pm window also leaves room for a slower evening visit.

Regular farmers markets continue through summer

The evening dates sit alongside the regular Derby Farmers’ Markets, which are also continuing through the season.

Those regular markets are scheduled for Sunday 28 June, Sunday 26 July and Sunday 30 August, according to the council’s announcement.

The farmers market began in January and has become, in the council’s words, a firm favourite with shoppers. The summer evening format is being added as an extension of that programme rather than a replacement for the Sunday dates.

A Friday night option in the city centre

Councillor Gurkiran Kaur, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for City Centre, Culture and Tourism, said the evening markets add “an extra dimension” to what Derby Market Hall already offers.

She said bringing together local traders, fresh food and live music in the evening creates a relaxed space for people to wind down after work or meet friends.

For residents planning a visit, the practical details are simple: the three evening markets take place at Derby Market Hall on 19 June, 17 July and 21 August, each running from 3pm until 9pm with free entry.
