Derby Market Hall supper club gives diners six dates

A glass of fizz on arrival, a three-course menu and a different local guest chef at the stove: Derby Market Hall is setting up a new Saturday Supper Club inside its Grade II-listed building.

The dining series starts on Saturday 4 July and is due to run on selected Saturdays until Saturday 24 October. It takes place at Derby Market Hall in Derby, costs £36 per person, and is aimed at food lovers looking for a smaller, chef-led dining experience. A start time has not been listed in the source information.

Hosted by Mark’s Wilder Gardens, the Saturday Supper Club at Derby Market Hall will use a rotating lineup of local guest chefs. Each event is built around a bespoke three-course menu created for that date, with ingredients sourced as locally as possible according to Derby City Council.

Six Saturday dates at Derby Market Hall

The limited series is scheduled for Saturday 4 July, Saturday 1 August, Saturday 29 August, Saturday 19 September, Saturday 3 October and Saturday 24 October.

That spread of dates gives the event a season-long presence rather than a one-off launch night. For Derby Market Hall, the format also puts its food traders and guest chefs into a more focused evening setting, separate from a standard market-hall visit.

The first event, on Saturday 4 July, will see Arepita take over the kitchen. Derby Market Hall says the opening menu will feature authentic Venezuelan dishes and will be fully gluten-free, tailored for people with coeliac disease or gluten intolerance.

What the £36 ticket includes

Tickets cost £36 per person. The price includes a glass of fizz on arrival, a three-course meal, and tea or freshly brewed coffee to finish.

Wine pairings are not included in the ticket price. A selection of red and white wine pairings chosen by The Spirit Run will be available to buy during the evening.

The supper clubs can accommodate vegan and vegetarian options with advance notice. The source also confirms gluten-free menu options for the opening event, with Arepita’s fully gluten-free Venezuelan menu leading the programme.

Local chefs in an intimate dining space

The event is being hosted by Mark’s Wilder Gardens, run by Mark Cummings on the Market Hall’s first floor. Cummings said the idea came from supper clubs he had experienced in London, where the appeal was the combination of a small setting, a surprise menu and the uncertainty of who else would be at the table.

He said he wanted to bring that format to Derby Market Hall, giving local guest chefs room to create something different while giving diners in Derby a chance to try menus made specifically for the club.

Councillor Gurkiran Kaur, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for City Centre, Culture and Tourism, said the Saturday Supper Club fits into the Market Hall’s growing mix of independent businesses and events since reopening.
