Croydon has appointed Councillor Mohammed Islam as its new Civic Mayor after a mayor-making ceremony at Annual Council on 27 May 2026.

The Selhurst ward councillor will carry out ceremonial and public duties across the borough during his term, representing Croydon at community events, civic occasions and local engagements.

Selhurst councillor takes ceremonial office

Councillor Islam has lived in Croydon since 1980, after moving from Ipswich. He has lived in Selhurst for 22 years with his wife, Farhana, and their four children, and works as an approved driving instructor.

Croydon Council said he is a founding member of the British Bangladeshi Society of Croydon, which provides educational, cultural and wellbeing support to local communities.

Councillor Islam said he wants his year in office to focus on inclusion, mutual respect and bringing communities together across the borough. His chosen charities are expected to be formalised shortly.

Civic Mayor role is separate from Executive Mayor

The Civic Mayor is not the same role as Croydon’s Executive Mayor. The Civic Mayor performs ceremonial and representative duties, while the Executive Mayor is elected by residents every four years to lead Croydon Council.

Councillor Islam said it was a privilege and a tremendous honour to serve as Civic Mayor and represent Croydon’s diverse communities in a public service role.

Deputy Civic Mayor also appointed

Councillor Scott Roche, who represents Shirley South, has been appointed Deputy Civic Mayor. He was previously cabinet member for streets and environment, covering areas including transport, sustainability and environmental services.

Before entering local government, Councillor Roche worked in Parliament as a senior caseworker for MPs. He said he looked forward to supporting local events and working with residents, community organisations and volunteers.

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, congratulated both councillors on their appointments. Residents and community groups can request the Civic Mayor or Deputy Civic Mayor for an event by applying through the council at least two weeks in advance.
