A 43-year-old Boston learner has received the Greater Lincolnshire Adult Learner of the Year award after turning an introductory electrical course into a route towards a new career.
Halmat Tofiq began studying at Boston College in 2025 with limited electrical experience. He wanted to develop practical skills and work towards a recognised qualification in the sector.

His daughter, Honey, said the college’s tutors supported his progress with “guidance, patience and encouragement at every step”. Halmat received his award from Justin Brown, Lincolnshire County Council’s assistant director for growth, during a presentation at Lincoln Castle.
Practical skills and support for classmates
Halmat enrolled on the Introduction to Electrical Installation course and quickly impressed tutors with his practical ability, attitude and willingness to help others.
Steve Davison, subject lead for electrical at Boston College, said Halmat displayed natural leadership and helped keep other learners motivated and engaged. As the course continued, Halmat developed his technical knowledge and became a more independent learner.

The award recognises adult learners across Greater Lincolnshire who demonstrate commitment, progress and determination. Halmat’s experience provides a local example of how an entry-level course can create a clear path into more advanced training.
Level 2 diploma opens the next route
After completing the introductory course, Halmat enrolled on a Level 2 Electrical Diploma. That qualification represents his next step towards employment or further training in the electrical sector.
The skills have practical relevance across construction, housing and infrastructure projects, which require qualified electricians. Lincolnshire County Council said its adult learning team works with colleges, employers and industry partners to align training with local workforce needs.
Brown said Halmat’s progress had placed him in a strong position to gain a formal qualification and pursue a career that interests him. His next confirmed milestone is completing the Level 2 diploma at Boston College.
